Provision of specialized equipment to optimize honey production and access the national market

Full-scale war has dealt a devastating blow to beekeeping in the Kharkiv region. Destroyed apiaries, ruined equipment, mined fields, and lost sales markets have put the survival of entire family businesses at risk.

A powerful response to these challenges was the project «Honey for Hope», implemented by the District #1 Charity Foundation in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Its main goal was to restore the economic capacity of affected families by providing tools for self-employment, stable income, and the development of the local economy.

The project focused on supporting active beekeepers in rural communities of the Kharkiv region whose businesses were affected by the hostilities. Initially, the team planned to support 70 apiaries, but thanks to a flexible approach and successful budget optimization, the actual scope of support was increased. As a result, assistance was provided to 89 households (a total of 272 people). Among them: 32 internally displaced persons (IDPs); 18 persons with disabilities.

This initiative is unique as it covered the full cycle of craft production — from honey extraction to entering the national market.

Each beekeeper received the specific equipment they lacked due to destruction or theft during the occupation. Within the project, we procured and delivered:

  • 191 beehives;
  • 15 trailers;
  • 28 bee transport vehicles for migratory beekeeping;
  • 28 modern honey extractors;
  • 37 uncapping tables;
  • 48 wax melters;
  • 35 heated uncapping knives.

To expand sales channels, our team additionally procured 10 mobile trading pavilions. This enabled local producers to go beyond their villages and present the Kharkiv-based brand «Explosive Honey» at well-known capital markets «Kurazh» and «Vsi. Svoi», where five beekeepers personally showcased their products.

Long-term impact

The «Honey for Hope» project demonstrated sustainable results that continue to benefit communities even after the official end of funding:

Boost to cooperation: In the Slobozhanska community, beekeepers initiated the creation of an official beekeeping association after receiving the equipment.

Sharing economy: Beekeepers established internal cooperation and began jointly using large-scale equipment (bee transport vehicles, trailers, honey extractors). This significantly increased productivity and honey extraction volumes across the community.

Psychological reintegration: For families affected by war-related losses, restoring their apiaries became not only financial relief but also genuine therapy and proof that their work has a future on their native land.

Supporting small-scale rural agriculture in wartime conditions is one of the most effective models for building resilience in de-occupied and frontline regions of Ukraine. By enabling self-employment today, we lay the foundation for the country’s economic revival tomorrow.
