Kakhovka hydroelectric plant explosion: Tragedy and relief efforts
On June 6th of 2023 , one of the most horrifying tragedies happen. Russian terrorist state blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, a station that supplied southern Ukraine with electricity and fresh water. Because of an enormous flood people lost their homes, and all their property was destroyed.
More than 80 settlements in the Kherson region were flooded — rescuers evacuated elderly and immobile individuals on boats, though the tragedy resulted in over 100 confirmed deaths, and countless cases people missing, and thousands of cases of severely injured victims, also as a result of the explosion, fertile soil became completely unfit for agricultural activities and any ecosystems of that regions ceased to exist.
Immediately after receiving news of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam explosion, the charitable foundation “District #1” responded in no time by opening a donation point and within 4 days were already delivered emergency relief goods:
- 4+ tons of food
- 3+ tons of hygiene products
- Up to 10 tons of clothing
- 2,000 liters of drinking water
- 12 generators
- 30 large power banks
- 50 flashlights
- 70 new pillows
- 70 sets of dishes
- 5 rubber boats and engines for them
- 18 water pumps
- 4 tons of animal feed
- Several boxes of medicines
This initiative became a clear example of true societal consolidation. Thanks to the quick response from people who began bringing in aid almost immediately, dealing with the aftermath of the catastrophe became significantly easier. All the collected aid was promptly delivered to Kherson and distributed to those in the greatest need, as well as to the volunteers working on mitigating the flooding consequences.
